Relevant Artist Research – Tomas Saraceno
Saraceno has been a constant help with my projects. 14 Billions has been the most inspirational piece I have encountered, and I’d say it’s what started my interest in Installation art. This piece encourages me to created installations which can be approached and interacted with; an art piece which focuses more on the experience, rather than the concept behind it. Saying this, 14 Billions was designed and built over years of research, however it expresses the concept upfront, allowing the viewer to indulge in the experience of the space.
Artist Influence – Tomas Saraceno – Recap/Extended
I have already talked about Saraceno before, but I feel like I need an update.
So for most of my professional practice, I have been influenced by Tomas Saraceno in some way or form. I was instantly drawn towards his ’14 Billions’ piece, I just adored the use of space and how the public were allowed to explore the piece. The amount of information, time, and energy that went into making ’14 Billions’ astounds me.
’14 Billions’ is a great example of architecture, and the structure of how a spider’s web is formed. I’m personally interested by the use of rope, grounding points, and tying methods within the piece. After researching this piece, it lead me to create my own variation of it, and has then gone on to be a permanent feature within my work.
This is where my constant use of string derived from. String is a simple material which used in the right way, can create wonderful pieces of work. If I hadn’t come across Saraceno at the time which I did, I wouldn’t be doing what I do now.
Project Two – Final Piece
Hi everyone! This is my final piece and also my exhibition piece for Project Two. Unfortunately the exhibit has been and gone, but here are some photo’s of my piece at the exhibit. I will be posting a full catalog of the exhibit later on.
This project has evolved over time from wanting to create my own imaginary world, to wanting to explore space through interactivity. This project is a continuation from project one, and has become something else in its own rights. I had a lot of fun during this project and I’m so happy from the outcome. I can’t wait for my second year at university where I’ll have even more freedom to make what I want.
As always, I hope you enjoy.
Project Two – Installation #3
Hi everyone! This is the third installation for this particular project.
I have placed hooks within my space to create permanent fixtures to design installations; once made and documented, the installation is removed from the space and the fixtures are used for another installation/design. This is the third installation in this space, so I decided to be a bit more adventurous. I used the same method as I did in the first installation by just going for broke and letting the installation tell me where to go. But with this one I made a path way for the viewer to walk through the installation. Allowing the viewer to experience the installation from new perspectives and angles.
This project (Project Two) was carried forward from Project One. The idea being about creating a space/environment of my own imagination/creation, this then lead to wanting to explore space and involve interactivity. Project Two is now lead by the desire to create an interactive installation which explores its environment and develops its own world/space, allowing the viewer to walk through and experience the space thus interacting with it.
These are some of my documentation of the installation.
As always, I hope you enjoy.
Artist Influence – Tomás Saraceno
Tomás Saraceno, has always been a favourite artist of mine. His work has always intrigued me, by the way the architecture of his work stands alone by itself. One of my favourite pieces of Saraceno’s work is his 14 billion piece, which is an installation piece on how a spider constructs its web; I used it as influence for one of my earlier projects in A-level, and since then I have always been interested in installation and the use of space.
From what I’ve gathered, Saraceno has always been interested in creating his own environment, most of his work is the lead to an idea, which is to create a city in the clouds. Saraceno’s background knowledge in architecture has given him the ability to create unimaginable spaces in which are interactive to the viewer; these spaces allow the viewer to explore their surroundings within the space without any fear of danger, even though some of these spaces do require the viewer to step out of their comfort zone. I personally have not experienced any of Saraceno’s work, from what I’ve heard though his work is amazing to see and to experience.
Saraceno’s work relates to mine because we are both interested in creating our own world, whether this be within reality or imaginary. With Saraceno having the knowledge of architecture and how to build his own world, he has the ability to go beyond the limits of space and create unbelievable spaces.
Tomás Saraceno is influenced by space, the space around the Earth, outer space, all of space. From the information on his website, Saraceno shows a lot of information about space, the galaxies, and all of space. From what I can gather, Saraceno enjoys explaining/exploring the possibility of space, and enjoys bending the rules on how space can be used; I believe Saraceno takes pride with his research and always tries to push the ‘impossible’ with each piece he makes.
The text above is a mix of my own opinion and research of Tomás Saraceno.

Critical Studies Three
Tomás Saraceno – In Orbit
Tomás Saraceno’s piece, In Orbit, is a truly fascinating display of interactivity, design and style. In Orbit was opened to the public on 22nd June 2013, it is a construction of steel nets which are laid out in three levels. Within the nets are half a dozen spheres, the spheres are up to 8.5 meters in size and have been placed within the installation. The net structure overall covers 2,500 square meters and floats over a 25 meter drop within the gallery. Visitors to the gallery can enter the installation and walk between the three layers between the spheres.
In Orbit is designed to be a network which moves and flexes when the viewer walks around within it; when more than one person walks within the space, the movement of one person effects the others, making the piece act as a sort of spiders web; every connection connected to itself, constantly altering the piece to accommodate the viewer, due to the vibrations of the viewers. Saraceno talks about his piece as a new hybrid form of communication, with reference to the vibrations being transferred from person to person.
In Orbit was planned over a three year period, and was constructed with the help of engineers, architects and biologists. Out of all of Saraceno’s work, this piece Is the most complex, and weighing in at three tons on the net structure alone, is one of his heaviest pieces. Saraceno, for years, has researched many species of spiders, and the structure of their webs. Saraceno has studied the network construction technology of webs and uses the functionality, strength, and beauty within his own artistic practice.
Every single piece of Saraceno’s work, including In Orbit, is a part of a larger project ‘Air-Port-City’, a floating city of the future; a utopia in response to global pollution, growth, and dramatic ecological problems, which is making the Earth an increasingly uninhabitable place.
In conclusion, Saraceno’s piece is a construct of years of research and thought, which is beautiful in its architecture and design. A truly fascinating concept, for which we may have to take inspiration from if the world does in fact become uninhabitable.
